Rhodesian Ridgeback
Loyal and affectionate
History and General Information of Rhodesian Ridgeback dog breed
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a distinctive breed known for its unique “ridge” of hair along its back, which grows in the opposite direction to the rest of its coat. This breed is often referred to as the “African Lion Hound” due to its history as a hunter and guardian in southern Africa. Ridgebacks are strong, athletic dogs with a dignified appearance and loyal nature. Originating in Southern Africa, particularly in what is now known as Zimbabwe and South Africa, the Rhodesian Ridgeback was developed by indigenous peoples and European settlers. They were bred to be versatile hunting dogs capable of tracking and cornering game, including lions. The breed’s ridge of hair served as a natural protection against the harsh African climate and predators.
