The Sheltie’s history traces back to the Shetland Islands of Scotland, where they were bred for herding and protecting small livestock like sheep and ponies. They are descendants of working collies from the mainland, as well as other smaller breeds like Pomeranians and possibly Scandinavian Spitz-type dogs.
